FAQs

How can we help?

How do I get to Washington Island?

There is a car ferry that will take you and your car, motorcycle, or bike from Northport Pier, Door County. It's about a 30 minute ride. Check the ferry schedule and reservation information here. You are also able to take your own boat to rent a slip at the marina or fly your airplane over. Yes, there is an airport on the Island!

Can I take my car on the Island?

You sure can! And we strongly suggest that you do. We have about 100 miles of country road to explore. And the cabins are about 6 miles from the ferry dock.

Is there other transportation?

There are bikes and mopeds to rent, but they are all first come, first serve. There is also a taxi service.

What is there to do on Washington Island?

The Island has so much to offer! Schoolhouse Beach, Sand Dunes Beach (as well as several other public beaches); Little Lake; Sievers School of Fiber Arts; Art & Nature Center; Trueblood Performing Arts Center; Mosling Recreation Center (with a pool for swimming year round). Farm markets in the summer, two lovely lavender farms, many shops, hiking trails, and more. Trinity Lutheran Church's beautiful and unique rustic Stavekirke. Mountain Lookout Tower provides a hearty hike and breathtaking views. There's a literary festival in the fall, a birding festival in the spring, and a music fest in the summer. And of course - restaurants, coffee shops, live music, and celebrations of all kinds.

How many can stay at your cabins?

A total of 18 people can stay if both cabins are rented. 11 in the Lodge and 7 in the Nook. Please inquire further if you have a larger group.

What linens do you provide?

We have hand towels for the kitchen and bathroom available for our guests. We do not have sheets or bath/beach towels available at this time. In order to keep our cleaning fee low for our guests we ask that you bring your own for now. We hope to provide linens eventually.

Can we check in early/out late?

Sure! Regular check in time is 3pm. Regular check out time is 11am. We always try to accommodate early check-in or late check-out requests as long as we have a guest free day at that time. We just need to be sure that it works for our cleaning schedule.

What seasons are you open?

Right now we are open Memorial Day Weekend through late-October. We are hoping to make winter stays available eventually. If you're interested in a winter stay, let us know! The more requests we have the sooner we can make it possible.

Are the cabins on the water?

They are! We have 600 feet of frontage on Lake Michigan between all our properties. We have a very unique feature: a bedrock beach! It's a smooth bedrock bottom instead of sand. It's very shallow for a long ways out from shore. It's a great part of the lake for families to play in! We highly recommend bringing "water shoes" to protect sensitive feet from the pebbles and stones.

How did you build the cabins?

The original, larger cabin - the Lodge - was built by Bob & Gail along with their children and many other friends and family in 1980. The logs came from a kit that they selected, but each log was lifted and set in place by hand.

The newer cabin, the Nook, was designed and built by island professionals in 1999. It was built using Montana fir trees, has dove tail corners, and was built without chinking (also called the "lateral groove" method).

Can I rent both cabins?

Absolutely! The Lodge and the Nook can be rented separately, of course, but our favorite is when we are able to book an Island vacation for you in both cabins! As a (very) large family, we love when our guests want to spend some extra time with their loved ones.

How do I book?

Send us an email! We like to hear from our soon-to-be guests and also need to coordinate with our cleaning staff, so we've chosen not to set up automatic bookings at this time. Please allow us at least 24 hours to respond. We wish it was different, but the cabins are not our main jobs, so we often need to wait until the evening or catch a few minutes over lunch while at our regular jobs to respond. If we confirm that your dates are reserved, you'll be asked to complete the rental agreement electronically, and will have two weeks to make a minimum payment of 50% of the total due.

What do you require to secure my dates?

To secure your dates, you must electronically submit a payment of at least 50% of the total cost upon being invoiced. Other payment arrangements may be available upon request.

When is the total payment due?

A minimum of 50% of the total is due to secure your dates. The full balance is due within 30 days of the invoice date. If initial booking is made within 30 days of arrival date, full balance is due immediately to confirm your stay.

Contact us by email for more details or to inquire about other payment arrangements.

What is your cancellation & refund policy?

Guests must cancel in writing (digital written notice is acceptable) and receive written confirmation response from us. Refunds are as follows: 100% of payment, less the $150 non-refundable deposit & any bank transaction charges, if canceled more than 30 days prior to the arrival date; 50% of payment, less the $150 non-refundable deposit & any bank transaction charges, if canceled 15-30 days prior to arrival date; 0% if canceled fewer than 15 days prior to the arrival date. When possible, we will attempt to find other dates that work for you and apply your payments to the new dates.

How do I access the cabins?

Once full payment is made, you'll receive a Welcome Email with a key code to get into the cabins along with some other detailed information about your stay.
